Cold War Comic Life Assignment

You will create a comic that tells the story of a Cold War event/issue and involves some school-appropriate humor.

Step 1: Decide if you want to work alone or with a partner (2 maximum).

Step 2: Choose one of events from the Cold War packet (or Decolonization Notes) that will be the topic/focus for your comic. You might want to do a little more research into the event to be able to have your comic focus on a subtopic within the event. For example, find out more about one of these...
  • the negotiations and clash between Truman and Stalin at the Potsdam Conference
  • how Europe reacted to US Marshall Plan aid
  • a specific battle in the Korean War or how close America came to using nuclear bombs
  • the Soviet launch of the Sputnik satellite or the Apollo mission to the moon
  • the paradox of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) in the nuclear arms race, or the US-Soviet SALT talks to limit and reduce nuclear weapons
  • efforts to escape over the Berlin Wall or the protests that caused the communist government to open the Berlin Wall in 1989
  • how terrified the US public was about nuclear war during the Cuban Missile Crisis or the secret deal made between Kennedy & Khruszchev
  • the Vietnamization process in the Vietnam War or the US public reaction (protests) of the war or about a specific battle in the war (i.e. the Tet Offensive)
  • why the Soviets had such difficulty fighting the mujahideen in Afghanistan or the US Olympic boycott of 1980

Step 3: Brainstorm an idea/overall plan for your comic. This exemplar can help give you a sense of what you are aiming for (the exemplar is 2 pages, yours can be less or more). Exemplar:

Step 4: Start working in Comic Life or drawing your own. Ask Mrs. Ruthman or classmates if you need help with the program.
