Research Project: Obstacles to Peace

The U.S. government is currently assisting in another round of negotiations aimed at getting Israelis and Palestinians to reach a two-state solution in which Palestinians get land for their own nation that can peacefully coexist with Israel. In this assignment, we will gather information about some of the major issues that must be tackled in these negotiations. You and a small group will be assigned one of the topics below.

Step 1: INDIVIDUAL. Read and take notes on each of your three sources. Your notes should focus on
  • what are the issues/details involved in your topic?
  • what do Israelis want and why?
  • what do Palestinians want and why?
  • (if possible) what position does the U.S. government take?

Optional Notes Template:

*Note- the vocabulary in some of these sources may be tough- try to work through it and take your best shot at the meaning. If you think something is an important details and you just can't figure it out, note it somehow so you can ask your group or Mrs. Ruthman next class.

Step 2: GROUP You will work together as a group to create and present a slideshow to the class that explains your topic.
  • Organize your presentation around the notes categories/questions
    • What are the key issues/details involved in your topic
    • What do Israelis want and why
    • What do Palestinians want and why
    • (if available) What position does the U.S. government take
  • Have at least 2 slides per person in your group (so each person is responsible for presenting 2 or more slides)
  • Have a relevant image on each slide- cite the source of your images. Explain your images as you present!
  • 30 words or less per slide- have notes prepared so you can explain and add details. Make sure things are in your words and you explain what you are presenting so you can answer clarifying questions
  • Have consistent font, formatting, background, etc.
